Description (click to expand)
The counseling relationship typically begins with a clinical assessment. The counselor collects information about your current symptoms, clinical/treatment history, social background, substance history, mini-mental assessment, and risk assessment. The information is reviewed to determine if a DSM-V diagnosis is appropriate. After the initial appointment, you and your counselor will develop treatment goals to target current symptoms or concerns. Sessions typically last between 45-55 minutes. The average course of treatment lasts between 6 months to 1 year. However, the therapeutic relationship may last longer, depending on the severity of symptoms and environmental factors that may be impacting symptoms. Over the course of treatment, clients will work towards treatment goals. Counselors utilize different evidence-based techniques to address clinical symptoms. Much of the counseling work occurs outside of therapy. Counselors will assign homework assignments to support further and reiterate the concepts discussed in treatment. Completion of homework assignments is vital to your success as a client.
